At the opening reception for “The Holy Ellipsis…” spectators were treated to incredible displays of live art as Todd created two pieces in front of a crowd of over 100 patrons in the packed Roland Fine Arts Center lobby. In between Todd’s two live demonstrations, everyone was invited into the gallery where the full collection was on display. Guests enjoyed food and fellowship along while viewing the art.

Todd’s collection of work explores the visualization of the holiness and glory of God. Todd will tag his artwork with three dots (an ellipsis) to represent Isaiah’s vision of the Lord on his throne while seraphim circled Him crying out, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

A 1997 alum from , Todd is a multidisciplinary artist who creates art that is inspired by and helps express his faith as a Christian. He has taught graphic design at HLGU since 2020 and took the role of Marketing Coordinator at the University in 2022.

“It was wonderful to see everyone come out for the show,” Todd said. “HLGU staff, faculty, students, and community members alike came together for a night of art, fellowship, and food. I enjoyed being able to share my passion with everyone.”

All of the pieces from “The Holy Ellipsis…” will be on display in the Hagerman Art Gallery until mid-March. The next scheduled display will include art created by local area high school students.

Beginning this fall, she will be teaching theory and piano, and will serve as an accompanist for the University.

“I am thrilled for Ms. Pyne to join the HLGU family of educators who are passionate about integrating the Christian faith and learning,” said Dr. Dennis, interim vice president for academic administration. “Alyssa views her musical talents as beautiful gifts given by God, and she views herself as a steward of those gifts.”

Pyne comes to HLGU from Houghton, New York where she received one of her two master’s degrees. The first is in curriculum and instruction from Clarks Summit University and the other in collaborative piano performance from Houghton College. At both universities she has gained university classroom teaching experience as a graduate assistant.

“Alyssa’s excellent academic credentials and her teaching experience coupled with her commitment to train students to serve God with their musical talents, make her a natural fit at HLGU where we strive to prepare students to use their knowledge for service,” said Dr. Dennis.

“I am continually amazed and overwhelmed by the beauty of God’s gift of music and the opportunities He has given me to study it, teach it, and share it with others,” said Pyne.

HLGU’s music department is devoted to equipping students with the key fundamentals and Christian worldview they need to succeed after graduation in careers such as teaching in public and private school systems, leading worship in churches, teaching privately, and more.

HLGU classes of 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999, and 2009 will be our honored guests at Homecoming 2019, which promises to be a fun, event-filled weekend.

“Homecoming is the time of year for Trojans to return to their roots, and we are looking forward to honoring the class of 1969,” said Lauren Youse ’05 M’16, director of alumni relations and development. “Their 50-year class reunion will leave each of us with a better sense of the tradition and pride that goes hand in hand with being alumni of this great University.”

Homecoming events start Friday morning with HLGU’s Annual Alumni Golf Classic, a tradition for many HLGU alumni and friends. This competitive yet fun scramble will take place at Norwoods Golf Course in Hannibal with registration beginning at 9 am and the shotgun start at 10 am.

Also on Friday morning, new members of the 50-Year Club will be inducted at a special luncheon event. The 50-Year Club was established to honor alumni who attended 50 or more years ago. Members of the class of 1969 will have a fun morning to reminisce about their days at HLGU and will receive special medallions. Following the event, a campus tour will be given, allowing attendees to visit their old dorms and see all the changes and growth that HLGU has experienced.

The annual Homecoming Alumni Art Show Reception will be held on Friday as well, at 5:30 pm. This year, the exhibit will feature a wide range of artwork from individual artists who are HLGU alumni.

Saturday events include alumni games of baseball, softball, volleyball, and men’s and women’s soccer. HLGU’s campus caterer, Fresh Ideas, will offer BBQ and sides for sale at the Alumni Tent. Also at the Alumni Tent will be a petting zoo from 11 am to 1 pm.

Join families at Noon in The Loft located inside the HLGU Student Center for a performance of “Star Trip” by the HLGU Theatre Department. This show is 30 minutes long and great for all ages.

Watch the women’s and men’s Trojan soccer teams take on Williams Baptist at 1 pm and 3:30 pm. Admission is free for both games. Both teams will be celebrating their seniors before the games.

During the Saturday night homecoming banquet, alumni, families and current students will gather in the Mabee Sports Complex for a buffet feast. Afterwards, guests will move to the Roland Fine Arts Center for the coronation of the 2019 Homecoming King and Queen, recognition of HLGU athletes, recognition of the 50 year reunion class, and the announcement of this year’s alumni award winners. Entertainment will be presented by HLGU faculty and staff with the campus’ version of “Are you Smarter than an Undergrad?”
