番茄社区 University (HLGU) is proud to announce Dr. Laura Davis-Maas, Associate Professor in the Craigmiles School of Nursing, as the recipient of the 2026 Parkway Distinguished Professor Award.
Named after Parkway Baptist Church in St. Louis, Missouri, which聽established聽the award in 1990, the Parkway Distinguished Professor Award honors one HLGU professor each year for outstanding professional and personal contributions to Christian higher education. The recipient is selected by faculty peers and receives a monetary award provided by the church.
The award was presented by Dr. Barbara Wright, a member of Parkway Baptist Church.
Dr. Davis-Maas has served faithfully as a member of the HLGU faculty since 2013. Throughout her years at the University, she has聽demonstrated聽a deep commitment to academic excellence, Christian service, and the success of her students and colleagues.
Students describe Dr. Davis-Maas as a rigorous and demanding educator who is also exceptionally clear, caring, and deeply invested in their growth and success. She brings extensive clinical聽expertise聽into the classroom while consistently reflecting Christ-centered compassion in her teaching and mentorship.
Her impact extends far beyond the classroom. Through her leadership, mentorship, and steadfast support of both faculty and students, Dr. Davis-Maas has played a vital role in strengthening and growing HLGU鈥檚 nursing programs. Her contributions have been both enduring and transformative.

Sponsored annually by Immanuel Baptist Church, the Staff Member of the Year Award recognizes a full-time staff member who exemplifies outstanding performance in contractual duties, meaningful contributions to the University through time, effort, and creativity, and a strong understanding and embodiment of HLGU鈥檚 mission of 鈥淜nowledge for Service.鈥 The award is intended to honor individuals whose faithful service contributes significantly to the success and accomplishments of 番茄社区 University. Staff members are nominated by their colleagues, with the recipient confirmed by the University鈥檚 Executive Cabinet.
The award was presented by Mr. Bob Parker, a member of Immanuel Baptist Church.
Over the course of her nine years at HLGU, Mrs. Shirley has consistently聽demonstrated聽exceptional commitment, compassion, and professionalism in every aspect of her work. Serving both as a Financial Aid Counselor and Assistant Director of Financial Aid, she has made a profound impact on countless students and families by helping guide them through the financial aid process with care, patience,聽and聽expertise.
Mrs. Shirley works tirelessly to ensure students have the resources, support, and guidance necessary to pursue their educational goals. Colleagues describe her as someone who listens carefully, responds thoughtfully, and embodies the heart of a servant-leader in all that she does.
Her faithful dedication to showing up each day, working diligently, and giving her聽very best聽reflects her deep commitment to the mission of HLGU. While much of her work takes place behind the scenes, colleagues noted that her impact is felt across the entire campus community.

Hannibal鈥慙aGrange University (HLGU) is pleased to announce the hiring of Dr. Kurt Haner聽as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). Dr. Haner brings three decades of experience in finance education, leadership, and mission鈥慸riven service and will begin his role on July 1, 2026.
As Chief Financial Officer, Dr. Haner is responsible for planning and executing the University鈥檚 business operations and fiduciary responsibilities in support of HLGU鈥檚 educational mission. In collaboration with the President, he will provide oversight of the controller, student accounts, accounts payable, human resources, campus security and other campus operations, ensuring sound financial practices and operational effectiveness across the institution.
“Dr. Haner brings a wealth of experience as an entrepreneur, educator, and expert in finance to the role of CFO,” said HLGU President Dr. Robert Matz. “His degrees in business, technology, and higher education administration make him well qualified for this position. His sterling reputation, established network within our community and his strong Christian character make him an ideal fit to lead business operations at HLGU.”
A proud alumnus of Hannibal鈥慙aGrange University, Dr. Haner earned his Bachelor of Science in Education in Business Education聽from HLGU in 1996, graduating as salutatorian. He later earned a Master鈥檚 Degree in Educational Technology (2003)聽from the University of Missouri, followed by a Doctor of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis聽 (2017)聽and a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis (2019), also from the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Dr. Haner has served as a business educator from 1996 to the present at Hannibal High School and the Hannibal Career and Technical Center (HCTC). Since 2008, his Finance Challenge students have placed top in Missouri and second in the Nation in 2013, demonstrating his commitment to excellence in financial education. He currently serves as the FBLA Advisor at HCTC. He has also taught as a dual credit instructor through Moberly Area Community College and has served the University of Missouri-Columbia on the doctoral board in the Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis program.
Dr. Haner鈥檚 leadership has been recognized with numerous honors, including being named Teacher of the Year in 2021聽at the Hannibal Career and Technical Center. His community involvement includes service as President and Vice President of the Hannibal Community Teachers鈥 Association, coaching Upward Basketball, organizing and leading Finance Feud聽events where students compete against local bank presidents and financial planners, and mentoring students through financial education initiatives.
Dr. Haner shared his enthusiasm for the role, stating that after 鈥30 successful years in finance education, I am excited to begin a new chapter where I can apply my skills, experience, and passion for finance beyond the classroom. I am motivated to contribute to HLGU while supporting the mission of the organization.鈥
Dr. Haner is a member of Gideons International聽and serves as a children’s church teacher, small group leader, and building committee member聽at Harvest Bible Church in Hannibal, MO. He demonstrates a vibrant personal Christian faith and active involvement in evangelical church life.
Dr. Haner resides in Hannibal, Missouri, with his wife, Dr. Jenni Haner, and family. He and his wife are the parents of three children and the grandparents of one grandson. Dr. Jenni Haner has served as an adjunct instructor in HLGU鈥檚 master鈥檚 program and has led summer Science Camp at HLGU for community children.

The trip includes transportation to and from the HLGU campus, an exclusive backstage tour of The Muny, and admission to the Broadway style production performed under the stars in America鈥檚 oldest and largest outdoor musical theatre.
Participants may purchase dinner on their own at a fast food restaurant during the trip or from concessions at The Muny.

The 鈥淒ay Trip to Springfield, Illinois 鈥 The Land of Lincoln鈥 will depart from the Roland Fine Arts Center parking lot at 8:00 a.m. and return to campus by approximately 6:00 p.m. Travelers will enjoy a full day of fellowship, learning, and historical exploration in the hometown of one of America鈥檚 most influential presidents.

The trip includes transportation to and from campus, admission to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, a visit to the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, and a stop at the Lincoln Tomb. Lunch will be on your own during the day鈥檚 activities.

At the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, guests will experience interactive exhibits, historical artifacts, immersive displays, and presentations highlighting Lincoln鈥檚 life, presidency, and leadership during one of the most challenging periods in American history. The museum is nationally recognized for bringing history to life through multimedia storytelling and engaging exhibits.

Participants will also tour the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, the only home Abraham Lincoln ever owned. Restored to its 1860 appearance, the home and surrounding neighborhood offer a glimpse into Lincoln鈥檚 family life before he became president and departed for Washington, D.C.

The trip will also include a visit to the Lincoln Tomb, the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary Todd Lincoln, and three of their four sons. The memorial site serves as a place of reflection and remembrance for one of the nation鈥檚 most significant historical figures.

The cost for the trip is $30 per person and includes transportation and admission to all sites. Lunch will be on your own. Reservations are required by July 6.

HLGU Announces Former Missouri Governor Michael L. Parson, who served as Missouri鈥檚 57th governor from 2018 to 2025, will deliver the keynote address at the University鈥檚 2026 Commencement ceremony.

Parson, born in 1955 in Wheatland, was raised on a farm in Hickory County, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for agricultural and rural life. A 1973 graduate of Wheatland High School, he joined the United States Army in 1975 and served six years as a military police officer.

In 1980, Parson married Teresa Seiner. Together, they have two children, Stephanie House and Kelly Parson.

Parson began his law enforcement career in 1981 as a deputy sheriff in Hickory County before transferring to the Polk County Sheriff鈥檚 Office in 1983. There, he became the department鈥檚 first criminal investigator and later served as Polk County sheriff from 1993 to 2005.

In addition to his public service, Parson has been a small business owner and a third-generation farmer. Since 1985, he has operated a cow-calf operation in Bolivar.

His career in elected office began in the Missouri House of Representatives, where he represented the 133rd District from 2005 to 2011. He later served in the Missouri Senate for the 28th District from 2011 to 2017. In 2017, he was elected Missouri鈥檚 47th lieutenant governor before being sworn in as governor on June 1, 2018, a role he held until January 2025.

During his tenure as governor, Missouri reached historic economic milestones, including record-low unemployment, strong wage growth, thousands of new jobs, and billions of dollars in business investment through public-private partnerships. His administration emphasized workforce development, infrastructure improvements, and investments in education, often with bipartisan support.

Parson has consistently emphasized rural values throughout his public service, including a commitment to agriculture, local communities, and rural health care.

HLGU looks forward to welcoming Parson to campus as he addresses the Class of 2026 and their families during this significant milestone celebration.

The ceremony will be held in the Mabee Sports Complex. Doors will open for guest seating at 9:00 a.m., and tickets are not required. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The ceremony will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m.

Briggs plans to pursue a degree in Business Administration at 番茄社区 University. He is actively involved in local worship teams in Hannibal and enjoys working out, as well as playing guitar and piano. He attends Calvary Baptist Church in Hannibal and has already made an impact on campus through his involvement as a dual credit student.

Briggs shared that his decision to attend HLGU was influenced by its Christ-centered mission. 鈥淚 chose HLGU for its Christian worldview and its strong Christian community of students and faculty,鈥 he said.

Matt Babcock, admissions counselor at HLGU, spoke highly of Briggs and his connection to the university. 鈥淓than is someone that聽seems to have聽a huge heart to connect with what God is doing here at HLGU. He plays in the worship band already and he has a footprint on campus already while he was a dual credit student.鈥

Gudde, the son of Caleb and Jayme Gudde and older brother to Molly and Kemper, exemplifies these qualities through his academic success, leadership, and involvement in his school and community.

A graduate of Plattsburg High School, Gudde has been actively involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, baseball, and the National Honor Society. He is also a member of First Baptist Church in Plattsburg.聽At HLGU, he plans to pursue a degree in Business Administration.

Gudde shared that his decision to attend 番茄社区 was rooted in the sense of belonging he experienced during his visit. 鈥淚 chose HLGU because of how welcomed I felt on campus by the coaches, staff, and students. Asjia Troy, a resident of Monroe City, Missouri and upcoming graduate of Hannibal鈥慙aGrange University, has been recognized as a 2026聽Missouri Teacher Leader of Tomorrow聽by the Missouri Milken Educators, in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

The Missouri Milken Educators created the Missouri Teacher Leaders of Tomorrow (MTLT) program in 2022 to recognize and support outstanding new educators entering the profession. This year, 15 teachers from across the state were selected to receive the honor.

All Missouri Teacher Leaders of Tomorrow inductees receive the benefits of one鈥憃n鈥憃ne mentorship from Missouri Milken Educators, each of whom has previously been recognized by the Milken Family Foundation with the National Milken Educator Award for exceptional achievements in education. Honorees participate in a year of coaching and mentorship and gain access to the statewide Missouri Milken Educators network鈥攁 valuable resource of accomplished educators committed to excellence in teaching and learning. Ms. Troy and the other honorees were surprised with the announcement of their selection.

Ms. Troy will graduate from Hannibal鈥慙aGrange University in May 2026 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She has accepted a teaching position with the Palmyra R鈥慖 School District, where she will teach third grade during the 2026鈥2027 school year. During the Spring 2026 semester, she completed her student teaching experience at Palmyra Elementary School in Malena Eger鈥檚 second鈥慻rade classroom.

Mrs. Ashlie Hirtzel, Ms. Troy鈥檚 student鈥憈eaching university supervisor during the Spring 2026 semester, praised her dedication and professionalism. 鈥淎sjia is hardworking, reflective, and deeply committed to excellence,鈥 said Hirtzel. 鈥淪he possesses a genuine commitment to young learners, connects with students at their level, and will be an outstanding educator.鈥

Those selected as 2026 Missouri Teacher Leaders of Tomorrow were chosen because they exemplify the promise and dedication needed to strengthen the future of the education profession. All honorees completed their undergraduate degrees in education and student teaching placements in Missouri school districts during the 2025鈥2026 academic year.
