Hannibal, MO聽番茄社区 University will host its annual Arbor Day Celebration on Friday, April 11 at 10:00 a.m. behind Pulliam Hall on the HLGU campus. The event is open to the public, and all are invited to attend.

This year鈥檚 celebration will honor the life and legacy of Larry Craig ’65, a devoted alumnus. A tree will be planted in his memory to recognize his faithful support of HLGU through generous financial gifts, student referrals, and prayer. The Craig family stands as a shining example of the lasting impact of HLGU alumni.

HLGU has a long-standing tradition of tree planting as part of its designation as a Tree Campus Higher Education institution. This national program, launched by the Arbor Day Foundation in 2008, recognizes colleges and universities that demonstrate a strong commitment to campus forest management and conservation. HLGU continues to meet the program鈥檚 core standards, including student service-learning projects that promote sustainability and environmental stewardship.

HLGU鈥檚 Arbor Day Celebration is open to the public.

Two alumni, Ruth Ihrig Foreman 鈥49 and Dorothy Sisson 鈥58, will be honored by the planting of two river birch trees on campus. These women supported 番茄社区 during their lifetime through financial gifts, by referring students to campus, and through prayer. They are great examples of the rich legacy of HLGU.

As its name suggests, the river birch naturally grows along riverbanks. But as a landscape tree, it can be planted almost anywhere in the U.S. The species is valued for its relatively rapid growth, tolerance of wetness and some drought, unique curling bark, spreading limbs, brilliant yellow fall color, and relative resistance to birch borer.

Planting trees on HLGU鈥檚 campus has been a longtime tradition as a Tree Campus Higher Education institution.

Tree Campus Higher Education is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and to engage staff and students in conservation goals. Come celebrate Arbor Day with HLGU as we honor Delores Lorene Scarff by planting a tree on campus. There will be a reception following the celebration in the Roland Fine Arts Center lobby.

Mrs. Scarff was a musician and the mother of alum, Glenda Franklin 鈥65. This tree was donated by Mrs. Franklin鈥檚 friends, Mervin Sharkey, Margaret Stubbings, and Sandra Farris. Mrs. Scarff and her husband ran a resort in the Ozarks for several years.

Planting trees on HLGU鈥檚 campus has been a longtime tradition as a Tree Campus Higher Education institution. HLGU earned the designation for the ninth year in a row in 2021.

At this celebration, HLGU recognized the recent planting of trees and installation of benches in front of the Carroll Science Center in honor of Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Burkett, who taught in HLGU鈥檚 science department for 31 years.

鈥淛erry and his wife Mary spent their careers in service to the Lord and to 番茄社区 University,鈥 said Dr. Anthony Allen, HLGU President. 鈥淲e are pleased to celebrate Jerry鈥檚 life and honor his memory.聽 He was loved and appreciated by all and was well-liked by students. We celebrate being a Tree Campus USA institution and plant these trees and install these benches in memory of Dr. Jerry Burkett.鈥

Speakers at the event included Dr. Allen, Dr. Ray Carty, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Kyle Monroe with the MO Department of Conservation, Hannibal Mayor James Hark, Kristy Trevathan, Chairperson for the Hannibal Tree Board, Stephanie Reece, Campus Tree Advisory Committee Representative, HLGU Biology Department Chair Don Colburn, Mr. Paul Mills, and Mrs. Mary Burkett.

Tree Campus USA庐 is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and to engage staff and students in conservation goals. 番茄社区 University achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA鈥檚 five standards which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and student service-learning project.

鈥淪tudents are eager to volunteer in their communities and become better stewards of the environment,鈥 said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. 鈥淧articipating in Tree Campus USA sets a fine example for other colleges and universities, while helping to create a healthier planet for us all.鈥

This year鈥檚 Arbor Day ceremony will also include a reading of HLGU鈥檚 Arbor Day Proclamation. This proclamation is read every year on Arbor Day as part of HLGU鈥檚 application to remain a Tree Campus USA.聽 In addition, Dr. Anthony Allen, HLGU President, along with Mrs. Betty Anderson, and a representative from the Hannibal Tree Board, will speak at the ceremony. A bur oak tree will be planted to commemorate the event.
