Winners were announced on Thursday, April 1st, 2021.

HLGU students Alex Shipley, Emma Anderson, Kamey Tyler, Leighton Allen, Grant Peters, and Dillion Dildine won second place in the recurring show category for News Beat. The PR Case Studies Class won first place in the Special Programs and Podcasts for the HLGU Virtual Graduation held in May 2020. In addition, Alex Shipley picked up first place for the entry titled 鈥淚zzy Strong鈥 in the sports package category together with Kelsey Morrison. As a pair, Alex Shipley and Emma Anderson won two awards: first place in the feature news story category for their video on the Ray Harvey mural in Hannibal, and first place in the hard news story category for the Allen siblings story.

鈥淧articipating in this competition is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our work, and it’s very rewarding to be recognized. Receiving the awards from the MBEA is truly a testament to the planning, execution, and care that goes into each story we tell. Being award-winners isn’t an arrival by any means, but an encouragement to continue to improve. Thanks to the collaboration of our news team and stellar instruction, we have the opportunity to continue to tell special stories well,鈥 said Emma Anderson, recipient of four of the five awards.

The MBEA contest is held annually, with entries from schools across the state. Judges who work or teach in the broadcast industry determine the winners. HLGU students picked up seven awards in the previous year鈥檚 edition, with some students winning again this year.

鈥淚’m really proud of our students. We compete against a lot of schools that are bigger and have more resources than we do. It’s nice to know that our program has students who are producing quality work that will help land them a job in the communications industry,鈥 said Assistant Communications Professor Christy Jung.

The MBEA coordinates educational and instructional activities in order to provide a platform for encouraging excellence in broadcast education in Missouri. Membership with the MBEA is open to both public and private universities and community colleges in Missouri.

HLGU Students First in the Nation /hlgu-students-first-in-the-nation/ /hlgu-students-first-in-the-nation/#respond Tue, 17 Mar 2020 20:40:47 +0000 http://hlg.frankandmaven.com/?p=10038 Communication studies students at 番茄社区 University who cover the news for their campus are now making headlines of their own after taking first place in a national news broadcasting competition.

The HLGU team of four competed against several other member schools from across the country in the 24-hour news competition sponsored by the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) on February 26. During the competition, students wrote, shot, and edited a television news segment without any help or guidance from their faculty sponsor.

鈥淭he story they produced had a great script, solid soundbites, and strong videography,鈥 said their instructor, Christy Jung. 鈥淚鈥檓 not surprised that they won. This group is a really special group that is very motivated. They are always working hard to be better at their craft.鈥

When accepting their first place award in the 24-hour competition, the team also accepted five other awards for individual submissions to other NRB competition categories, including first place in TV Newscast, first and third place in TV News Story, and 2nd and 3rd in promo.

HLGU student Emma Anderson was on the 2018 team that placed fourth in the competition. Joining her this year were Kelsey McCaughey, Kamey Tyler, and Alex Bradley.

鈥淧articipating in the 24-hour news challenge is a perfect way to put everything we鈥檝e learned in the classroom into action. It provides a special opportunity to get real world experience in a fun, competitive atmosphere,鈥 said Anderson.

Jung added, 鈥淥ur program provides lots of hands-on learning so our students are prepared and ready to compete. Our students are committed to telling stories with integrity and professionalism.鈥
