Jim and Linda Youse receive HLGU Alumni award /jim-and-linda-youse-receive-hlgu-alumni-award/ Wed, 30 Nov 2022 21:25:47 +0000 /?p=19223 番茄社区 University recognized the annual alumni award winners during the 2022聽Booster Gala on Saturday, November 12. The Outstanding Service Award was presented to Jim 鈥76 and Linda 鈥79 Youse. This award is given to 番茄社区 graduates who have given outstanding service to the University or their community through involvement in civic endeavors, religious leadership, or philanthropic efforts.

Jim and Linda Youse are both graduates of HLGU. Each graduated when 番茄社区 College was primarily a junior college offering AA degrees. Jim graduated in May of 1976 and Linda graduated in the summer of 1979.

Both participated in various activities while they were students at HLG. Jim played on the tennis and baseball teams and was on the dean’s list both years. Linda participated in choir, intramural sports and was also on the dean’s list.聽 Each have fond memories of their time spent on campus as commuters and are grateful for the education which HLGU provided them.

Jim went on to graduate from The University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree. He began his professional life with the Federal Landbank and then The Equitable Life Assurance Society. He later began a career in the pharmaceutical industry as a sales representative.

Linda finished her degree at Culver-Stockton College and graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Education in May of 1981. She taught fourth grade and then eighth grade in the Hannibal Public Schools. She later went on to be the director of the Immanuel Baptist Church daycare. During this time, Linda fondly remembers the early childhood classes of HLGU coming to tour the facilities at the daycare as well as the Helping Hands freshmen groups which worked tirelessly to help clean the facility. These groups represented HLGU in a very positive way to the community and gave Linda a sense of pride in her alma mater.

Jim and Linda were wed in 1978 and have been blessed with two daughters, Lauren Youse and Lissie Youse Wade. Not only did both of the girls graduate from HLGU, but both were on staff at the university as well. Lauren is currently the school’s Director of Alumni Relations and Development. Lissie is married to Jordan and is blessed to stay at home with her toddler son, Jamie.

Jim and Linda have served HLGU by attending every work day, volunteering to mow, trim, and help with the grounds. They also have regularly attended both the Missouri Baptist Convention annual meeting and the Southern Baptist annual meeting with Lauren, and helping her set up the exhibit booth and visit with the alumni and friends who stop by. They鈥檝e been generous supporters of the school by providing air conditioning for the Mabee Sports Complex weight room and giving to other HLGU projects. They also both serve on the HLGU Board of Visitors.

鈥淭here is a great deal of satisfaction knowing you are helping to create an important, lasting benefit to students and athletes that they will, in turn, remember fondly in the future,鈥 said Jim Youse.

The Youses are members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Hannibal, MO where they鈥檝e participated in Upward Basketball, church choir, work days, numerous committees, and teaching numerous Sunday School classes. Jim is the current President of the YMCA board of Directors. Linda is active in PEO and organizing her high school class reunions.

鈥湻焉缜 has played a significant role in the lives of our family members and we are truly grateful to have an opportunity to support this university,鈥 said Linda Youse.

番茄社区 University enjoyed yet another successful Homecoming weekend on November 11 and 12 that featured fun events for past and present students of the University.

Homecoming weekend was kicked off on Friday when new members of the 50-Year Club were inducted. The 50-Year Club was established to honor alumni who attended HLGU 50 or more years ago. This year, members of the classes of 1972 were treated to a special luncheon and HLGU memories were shared. At this luncheon, new members were honored with medallions that signified their induction.

A Disc Golf Glow Tournament was held on campus on Friday evening. Fifteen teams participated and raised over $500 for the annual fund.

The 番茄社区 University women’s basketball team hosted Culver-Stockton College in their home opener Saturday afternoon. Some struggles offensively and controlling the ball in the second half led to a Trojan defeat 52-85. The 番茄社区 University men’s basketball team hosted Missouri Valley College for their home opener Saturday afternoon. After a highly competitive and tightly contested game, the Trojans came out with a 65-61 victory. The last time HLGU recorded a win over the Vikings was in December of 2018. Free popcorn was sponsored by Answers in Genesis.

The 2022 HLGU Homecoming Court was introduced at halftime of the men鈥檚 game. This year鈥檚 homecoming king candidates included Tucker Hilliard, a criminal justice major; Lincoln Burt, a criminal justice major; Nacho Martinez Garrido, an exercise science major; Chris Stoner, a Christian studies major; and Cameron Deatherage, a sports and recreation management major. Homecoming queen candidates included Peyton Bray, an elementary education major; Mary Bradley, an elementary education major; Sierra Erke, a biology major with a chemistry minor; Anna Atherton, a psychology major with a criminal justice minor; and Maggie Dooley, a university studies major. 2021 Homecoming king and queen Ethan Bray and Sicily Johnston returned to campus to crown this year鈥檚 king and queen, Tucker Hilliard and Sierra Erke.

The Booster Gala, formally called the HLGU Booster Banquet, capped off a packed Homecoming Weekend at HLGU. Friends of the University and community members enjoyed fellowship and great food in the Roland Fine Arts Center prior to the formal program. HLGU Booster Gala was sponsored by HNB Bank.

Three awards were given out to outstanding HLGU Alumni. Scarlet and Blue Auction extremely successful for HLGU /scarlet-and-blue-auction-extremely-successful-for-hlgu/ Thu, 26 May 2022 13:32:52 +0000 /?p=18148 The Scarlet and Blue Auction, held on Friday, May 20, 2022 was a huge success for 番茄社区 University.

Over 200 items were donated to the auction by the community, HLGU employees and alumni. An impressive food spread was prepared and donated by the HLGU Board of Trustees, HLGU faculty, and staff.

As a result of generosity from friends and bidders, the Scarlet and Blue Auction raised $26,384.15 in total profit. This number exceeded the matching George H. Riedel Foundation grant of $25,000 for a grand total of $51,384.15 toward HLGU鈥檚 current financial challenge to help the University pay off or avoid any additional debt.

鈥淥ne of the sweetest things that happened at the auction was watching the fellowship among our attendees,鈥 said Director of Alumni Services and Development Lauren Youse. 鈥淭here were so many fun conversations happening 鈥 it really felt like a family reunion. I鈥檓 so thankful to all the community members, HLGU faculty and staff, and HLGU alumni who donated items and attended the auction. It was a wonderful event that raised much-needed funding for the University.鈥

The auction featured items like a signed Travis Kelce football, an antique pipe organ, several riding lawnmowers including a new John Deere X380 from SN Partners, an 1880s J.N. Scott Shotgun, and so many more items that were sold to community members and friends. A tea party with former HLGU first lady Katherine Burt sold for $1,700, highlighting the evening.

鈥淭he Scarlet and Blue Auction was a significant generator of resources for HLGU and importantly, it served as a venue for God to work through people鈥檚 lives as an encouragement to each other and for the mission of HLGU,鈥 said Vice President of Institutional Advancement Dr. Ray Carty. 鈥淭he auction was an enjoyable and encouraging event. RC Harlow, a professional auctioneer, did a wonderful job presenting the live auction in an energetic and professional manner. The auction helped to set the stage for a vibrant path going forward. We are thankful.鈥

The $25,000 matching grant from the George H. Riedel Foundation was given to support the mission of HLGU. Since the Riedel Foundation started in 2000, it has given nearly $150,000 in financial support to 番茄社区. Those awards have helped establish computer and band camps for Hannibal children, provided equipment for the science building, and scholarships for the university. It has also contributed money toward the fine arts theater and its productions, medical training for the nursing program and mentoring for at-risk kids.

“The Riedel Foundation trustees awarded this matching grant with full confidence that the community would support HLGU and the Scarlet and Blue Auction with their generosity,” said Riedel Administrator Sarah Deien. “We believe聽in the mission of HLGU and recognize not only the economic聽impact the University has in聽Hannibal, but also the many ways it enriches lives. The Riedel Foundation has had a long-standing relationship with the University and we hope to continue to collaborate on projects that benefit our community.”

HLGU Virtual Booster Banquet available now /hlgu-virtual-booster-banquet-available-now/ Thu, 14 Jan 2021 21:49:45 +0000 http://www.hlg.edu/?p=14730

The 79th Annual HLGU Booster Banquet will feature Dr. Larry Lewis, Dr. Paul Brown, and Dr. Woodrow Burt

Despite being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 番茄社区 University Booster Banquet featuring HLGU legends Dr. Larry Lewis, Dr. Paul Brown, and Dr. Woodrow Burt can be viewed virtually.

鈥湻焉缜 University has been nurtured and supported throughout the years by dynamic Christian leadership,鈥 Dr. Allen said. 鈥淭his year鈥檚 Booster Banquet highlighted three of our past presidents. What a special time to reminisce about the faithfulness of God in our past, present, and future.鈥

Dr. Larry Lewis served as HLGU president from 1981-1987. He helped HLGU transition from a predominantly two-year institution to a four years. Dr. Paul Brown was president from 1987-1994 and led HLGU through the historic 1989 fire. Dr. Woodrow Burt served as president from 1995-2012. His presidency included great growth in enrollment and new buildings like the Roland Fine Arts Center and Roland Library.

鈥淚 was very disappointed that our live event had to be cancelled 鈥 but we did not want to risk the safety of our attendees, faculty, staff, and students,鈥 said Lauren Youse, director of alumni services and development. 鈥淥ur next best option was offering a virtual Booster Banquet. The video we created is actually a wonderful piece that has the advantage of being viewed and shared over and over again. I鈥檓 excited to have these great memories from our past presidents that we can archive and enjoy for years to come.鈥

After reaching out offer a refund to all those who had purchased tickets for the cancelled physical Booster Banquet, a vast majority of ticket holders encouraged HLGU to keep their contributions as a donation to the University.

鈥淭he generous support we receive through our alumni and friends is vital as we seek to provide Christ-centered higher education,鈥 Dr. Allen said. 鈥淵our hearts will be warmed by the testimony of our legends.鈥

Next year鈥檚 Booster Banquet is currently scheduled for November 19, 2021. For more information about HLGU鈥檚 annual Booster Banquet, please contact Lauren Youse, at 573-629-3126, or via email at lauren.youse@hlg.edu.
