鈥淲e celebrate your diligence in improving the environment and quality of life at 番茄社区 University in 2019,鈥 said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. 鈥淲e know that 2020 has brought unprecedented challenges 鈥 but you have shown that your commitment to trees is unwavering. Now more than ever, thank you for contributing to a healthier planet for all of us.鈥

In order to achieve this distinction, HLGU met five core standards for effective campus forest management. This included, the establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and sponsorship of student service learning projects.

鈥淵our entire campus community should be proud of your sustained commitment to environmental stewardship,鈥 said Lambe.

During Homecoming weekend, HLGU will be holding an Arbor Day Celebration on Friday, October 2, at 10 am outside the Carroll Science Center to celebrate being named a Tree Campus USA 庐 for 2019. During this celebration, HLGU will be planting additional trees and installing benches in honor of Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Burkett, who faithfully taught in the science department at HLGU for 31 years.

Tree Campus USA 庐 is a national program launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation, which honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. Earlier in 2020, Tree Campus USA 庐 announced they will be changing their name to Tree Campus Higher Education.

HLGU Plans Arbor Day Celebration /hlgu-plans-arbor-day-celebration/ /hlgu-plans-arbor-day-celebration/#respond Tue, 20 Mar 2018 19:28:53 +0000 http://hlg.frankandmaven.com/?p=5577 番茄社区 University will hold an Arbor Day celebration on Friday, April 6, at 10 am in front of the Roland Library to plant two trees and celebrate being named a Tree Campus USA庐 institution for 2017, the fifth year in a row that HLGU has earned this designation.

Tree Campus USA庐 is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and to engage staff and students in conservation goals. 番茄社区 University achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA鈥檚 five standards which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and student service-learning project. Currently there are 344 campuses across the United States with this recognition.

鈥淪tudents are eager to volunteer in their communities and become better stewards of the environment,鈥 said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. 鈥淧articipating in Tree Campus USA sets a fine example for other colleges and universities, while helping to create a healthier planet for us all.鈥

Two sugar maples are being planted in front of the Roland Library to honor Dr. David Pelletier, vice president emeritus for academic administration. An additional two London plain and two Kentucky coffee trees will be planted on campus as well.

I’m very pleased with HLGU’s Tree Campus Committee and their commitment to maintain the campus tree plan and continue to increase the number of trees on our campus for our students, faculty, and staff to enjoy,鈥 said Betty Anderson, vice president for business and finance.

This year鈥檚 Arbor Day ceremony will also include a reading of HLGU鈥檚 Arbor Day Proclamation. This proclamation is read every year on Arbor Day as part of HLGU鈥檚 application to remain a Tree Campus USA.聽 In addition, Dr. Anthony Allen, HLGU President, along with Mrs. Betty Anderson, Hannibal Mayor James Hark, and Kristy Trevathan, a representative from the Hannibal Tree Board, will speak at the ceremony.

For more information on the Arbor Day Celebration, or on how to become a supporter of HLGU鈥檚 tree campaign, contact Mrs. Anderson at 573-629-3093, or via email at banderson@hlg.edu.
