HLGU Diligent in Efforts to Create a Healthier Planet

�� University has, for the seventh year, been honored with the 2019 Tree Campus USA ® designation.

“We celebrate your diligence in improving the environment and quality of life at �� University in 2019,” said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. “We know that 2020 has brought unprecedented challenges – but you have shown that your commitment to trees is unwavering. Now more than ever, thank you for contributing to a healthier planet for all of us.”

In order to achieve this distinction, HLGU met five core standards for effective campus forest management. This included, the establishment of a tree advisory committee, evidence of a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and sponsorship of student service learning projects.

“Your entire campus community should be proud of your sustained commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Lambe.

During Homecoming weekend, HLGU will be holding an Arbor Day Celebration on Friday, October 2, at 10 am outside the Carroll Science Center to celebrate being named a Tree Campus USA ® for 2019. During this celebration, HLGU will be planting additional trees and installing benches in honor of Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Burkett, who faithfully taught in the science department at HLGU for 31 years.

Tree Campus USA ® is a national program launched in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation, which honors colleges and universities and their leaders for promoting healthy trees and engaging students and staff in the spirit of conservation. Earlier in 2020, Tree Campus USA ® announced they will be changing their name to Tree Campus Higher Education.

�� University will hold an Arbor Day celebration on Friday, April 3, at 10 am outside the Carroll Science Center to celebrate being named a Tree Campus USA® institution for 2019, the seventh year in a row that HLGU has earned this designation.

The University will also honor Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Burkett’s memory by planting additional trees and installing permanent benches. Dr. Burkett taught for 31 years in the science department at HLGU.

“Jerry and his wife Mary spent their careers in service to the Lord and to �� University,” said Dr. Anthony Allen, HLGU President. “We are pleased to celebrate Jerry’s life and honor his memory. He was loved and appreciated by all and was well-liked by students. We celebrate being a Tree Campus USA institution and plant these trees and install these benches in memory of Dr. Jerry Burkett.”

“Students are eager to volunteer in their communities and become better stewards of the environment,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Participating in Tree Campus USA sets a fine example for other colleges and universities, while helping to create a healthier planet for us all.”

�� University will hold an Arbor Day celebration on Friday, April 5, at 10 am at the west/northwest end of the Burt Administration Building to celebrate being named a Tree Campus USA® institution for 2018, the sixth year in a row that HLGU has earned this designation.

Tree Campus USA® is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and to engage staff and students in conservation goals. �� University achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and student service-learning project.

This year’s Arbor Day ceremony will also include a reading of HLGU’s Arbor Day Proclamation. This proclamation is read every year on Arbor Day as part of HLGU’s application to remain a Tree Campus USA. In addition, Dr. Anthony Allen, HLGU President, along with Mrs. Betty Anderson, and a representative from the Hannibal Tree Board, will speak at the ceremony. A bur oak tree will be planted to commemorate the event.

HLGU Honored with 2016 Tree Campus USA® Recognition

�� University was honored with 2016 Tree Campus USA® recognition for the fourth year in a row by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management.

As part of HLGU’s Tree Campus USA initiative, one tree from every species native to northeast Missouri has been planted on campus. These trees are distinguished by gold signs planted at their base which state the tree name and provide a QR code that can be scanned by mobile devices to learn more about the tree.

Tree Campus USA is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation and to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. �� University achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project. Currently there are 296 campuses across the United States with this recognition.

The Arbor Day Foundation has helped campuses throughout the country plant thousands of trees, and Tree Campus USA colleges and universities invested more than $46.7 million in campus forest management last year. More information about the program is available at arborday.org/TreeCampusUSA.
